Big Rocks Trail, Morrow Mountain, 12/10/2011

Big Rocks Trail

Out and Back

2.5 miles total

Easy

On Saturday, BC and I returned to Morrow Mountain to hike the Big Rocks Trail.  The last time we were there, I saw the sign for the trail and it said, “2.5 miles.”  I knew it was an out and back, so I figured it to be 5 miles total.  About a half mile into the hike, looking at a junction sign, I realized that it was 2.5 miles total.

The trail starts in the campground on a park service road that leads to a storage building of some sort.  The road is level and easy walking except for a couple rutted out muddy spots.  Those parts were easy to avoid by walking on the shoulder.

After passing the building, the trail goes down a short hill and connects with the horse trail loop.  We turned left on the horse trail and followed that for about half a mile.  Then the Big Rocks Trail turned to the right while the horse trail went left.  I was a little apprehensive about having to dodge steaming piles of horse $#!& (poop) while on this part of the trail, but that turned out to not be the case.  The trail was in very good condition considering the multi-use nature of it.

From this point, the trail goes over rolling hills all the way to the river.  There are no long hills, and only a couple steepish portions.  Nothing strenuous.  It was, all in all, a pleasant walk.

Shortly after leaving the horse trail, there is a sign that describes the dangerous nature of the trail.  It warns of water hazards, steep cliffs, and rocks and the danger of serious injury or death that could occur.  Eight tenths of a mile later, there was still no sign of the dangers referenced on the sign.

Finally, we came to the river, and, after another warning sign, the dangerous part of the trail (also it’s namesake).  The trail dead ends into the river at a steep drop.  I don’t know if I’d call it a cliff, exactly, but it was steep.  We climbed down to the level of the river, as many other had obviously done before us.

We took a nice long break there.  We ate our snacks and watched a man fish from his boat.  I was hoping he would catch something while we watched, but he didn’t.  There were also small whirlpools created by the current of the river as it made it’s way past the large rocks at the river’s edge.  By all appearances, the water is quite deep here.

After our rest, we made our way back out to the car.  The hike wasn’t as long as we’d planned but it was well worth it anyway.  We had a good time.

Hattaway Mountain Trail - Morrow Mountain - 11/19/2011

Hattaway Mountain Trail
Loop
2.0 miles
Moderate/Strenuous

Campground/Swimming Pool Trail
One way
0.8 miles
Easy

On a pleasantly cool Saturday morning, BC and I set out for Morrow Mountain State Park to continue our quest to hike all the foot trails there by the end of 2011.  Our goal was to hike the Hattaway Mountain Trail with a bonus hike of the Campground to Swimming Pool trail.

We arrived at the park shortly after 8:00 and were on the trail around 8:35.  The hike on the Campground/Swimming Pool trail was short and relatively flat.  There was nothing extraordinary about the trail other than passing the Amphitheater.  It looks like it hasn't been used in quite a while...

We took a break at a bench near the swimming pool before starting up the Hattaway Mountain Trail.  This two mile loop goes almost halfway around Hattaway Mountain and then climbs almost straight up the mountain.   It comes down the other side of the mountain using a series of switchbacks.  This trail is far more strenuous then the Fall Mountain Trail and would be a real sweat inducer during warmer weather.

When we arrived at the split, we decided to go counter-clockwise.  As it turns out, this was a good idea.  I had read that one direction was really steep going up and that is what we were hoping for.  The first 3/4 mile of the trail was a series of gullies that the trail traverses.  This created a roller coaster type trail.  Up and down, up and down.  It made for an interesting hike and really wasn't that bad.

There is a series of water meter/connection boxes in the trail and like others, I wonder what they are for.  About halfway around the mountain, the trail turned sharply left and headed straight up the side of the mountain.

While it wasn't brutally steep, we still felt the burn in our legs.  It wasn't a long climb either.  I mean, the mountain is only a bit over 800' high at the peak.  One site lists the total climb at just over 435' in under a half mile.  Still, we were glad to make it to the top and sit on a log for a longish break.

Another quarter mile brought us to the summit and we took BC's picture.

The hike down was interesting with the fresh leaves on the ground.  There were places that I was glad for trees to grab hold of.  BC fell a couple times, but thankfully, didn't get hurt.

We got back to the swimming pool in about 90 minutes.  That's not bad for an old man and a little guy considering the constant up and down of the trail.  We rested for a few minutes and walked back down the road to the car.  Total:  About four miles in under three hours.

It doesn't look like we will finish our quest before the end of the year, but I think the rest of the trails at Morrow Mountain will make for good winter hiking.  Mostly short and close to home.

The rest of the pictures are below this without comment.  Enjoy!

Pilot Mountain - Jomeokee Trail - 10/1/2011

Jomeokee Trail
Loop
1.0 miles
Moderate

The Jomeokee Trail at Pilot Mountain is about as easy a way to see grand geology as I have found.  The park road goes practically all the way to the top of Little Pinnacle and there are overlooks with grand vistas right at the edge of the parking lot.  Pilot Mountain stands virtually alone in the northern Piedmont of North Carolina, rising dramatically above the surrounding countryside.  Winston-Salem, Hanging Rock, and the southern Virginia mountains are easily seen from various points on this hike.

We are working our way through all the trails at Morrow Mountain State Park.  We're just getting started in our quest and are hiking the short easy loops.  The Laurel Trail was the second hike of this day. The first trail we hiked was the Three Rivers Loop Trail.  The other trails we have hiked so far are the Quarry Trail and the Morrow Mountain Loop Trail.

Morrow Mountain - Morrow Mountain Loop Trail - 9/17/2011

Morrow Mountain Loop Trail
Loop
0.8 miles
Easy

After a long summer with no hiking whatsoever (except Clingman's Dome a couple weeks back) because of the brutally hot weather, and time and money constraints, Kristina and I decided to take the boys to Morrow Mountain since the temperature for the day was to be in the mid-seventies. There was a slight chance of rain, but it looked like a very slight chance. Turns out we were right and never did get rained on. We chose Morrow Mountain because it is relatively close to the house... less than an hour drive. I had never been to Morrow Mountain and didn't know what to expect of a "mountain" in Albemarle, NC. As it happens, Morrow Mountain fits the bill quite nicely, all things considered.
