Sugarloaf Mountain Trail - Morrow Mountain, NC - 1/2/2012

Sugarloaf Mountain Trail
Loop
5 miles (including connector trails)
Moderate

BC and I joined SixPanel on the Sugarloaf Mountain Trail at Morrow Mountain State Park on a pleasantly cool day to begin our 2012 hiking experience.  It was good to (FINALLY) get out on the trail with SixPanel.

Sugarloaf Mountain Trail is a loop trail that goes over the top of Sugarloaf Mountain (835').  Guess that's where they got the name...  This trail requires a short stint on both the Laurel Trail and the Morrow Mountain Trail coming and going.  To be fair, we could have parked in the horse trailer parking area and avoided the other trails.

The three trails together made for a nearly five mile hike.  This is the longest trail BC has hiked thus far.  He was a real trooper and hardly slowed us down at all.

The Sugarloaf Trail is the steepest in the Morrow Mountain State Park.  It was a good climb mostly straight up the mountain then a more gentle descent to the rolling hills around it.

At the top, there were some really nice spots to camp... if camping were allowed in the woods.  What's up with the state park officials for deciding that the people who own the park can't sleep in it except where they decide to allow it?  I kindof understand (but disagree with) the "no campfires" thing.  You don't want to burn down the whole park.  But what's the point of telling me I can't set up a tent in some leaves and sleep in it?

But I digress...  All in all, we had a really good time.  See below for some pictures...

No leaves on the trees made for nice views of the surrounding area.

  1. Practicing my state trooper look?! Nice. Very nice.

Well-written, as always. I'll eventually get around to mine since I (literally) just got the internet hooked back up at the house. Three minutes ago.
